To work as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) from Alberta in New York State, you must obtain a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license from the New York State Education Department (NYSED). There is no direct, automatic transfer of a Canadian P.Eng. license to a US P.E. license, but your credentials can be used to streamline the process through NCEES.

Here is a guide based on your requirements:

1. Requirements for New York State (P.E.)
New York is strict and generally requires a combination of education and 6–12 years of experience.

Office of the Professions (.gov)

• Education: An engineering degree, often evaluated by NCEES to ensure it meets US standards (CEAB-accredited degrees are generally accepted).

• Experience: You must have engineering experience that is verified. New York requires a total of 6 years of credit for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 12 years for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam.

• Exams: You will likely need to pass both the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam, administered by NCEES.

• References: A minimum of three, usually from American PEs, are required, plus two more (which can be Canadian P.Eng.).

2. Steps to Transfer from Alberta (APEGA)

• Set up an NCEES Record: This is the most efficient method to transfer your credentials. NCEES will verify your education, experience, and P.Eng. status.

• Contact NY Board: Apply for licensure by comity/endorsement through the NYSED Office of the Professions.

• Pass Exams: If you haven't already, you will likely need to write the FE and PE exams.

• Jurisdiction Exam: New York may require you to take a test on their specific engineering laws and regulations.

3. Key Considerations

• No Automatic Reciprocity: While the Canadian Free Trade Agreement covers interprovincial moves, it does not apply to the US. You must follow the US state's regulations.

• Work Authorization: To work in the US, you will need to secure a TN visa (under USMCA/NAFTA), which requires proof of your qualifications, including your P.Eng..

• Experience Requirements: While some US states do not require US-based experience, New York is known for being rigorous. However, as a Canadian P.Eng., your work experience in Alberta is highly valued.

• Temporary License: If you are only working on a specific project for a short time, you may qualify for a temporary permit rather than a full license.

Disclaimer: Regulations can change. It is highly recommended to consult the New York State Office of the Professions (Engineering) for the most current requirements.
